Somerset Vikings 1st XIII 48 – 36 All Golds A
On Saturday an inexperienced All Golds reserve grade travelled to a wind swept Weston Super Mare to play the current West of England champions, Somerset Vikings.
A number of last week’s victorious side had been promoted to the 1st XIII in the Southern Conference League and thus opportunities were afforded to no less than 6 debutants.
From the kick off All Golds A pressed with Will Baldwin, Alex Cox and Josh Llewellyn giving a glimpse of the future. Indeed the visitors took an early lead.
Ultimately experience and home advantage came to the fore and the Vikings – led by Bristolian brothers Dan and Marcus Brooker – seized the ascendancy, despite some courageous efforts in attack and defence spearheaded by middle unit Mike Addis. He carried and tackled tenaciously throughout the game alongside debutant James Elliot. A series of massive hits and heroic defending were the order of the day.
Wayne Mulhern was in great form in only his second game, combatting the conditions to get the ball to Baldwin, Llewellyn and Cox. Rhys Evans, back after a long absence, was constantly probing.
In the second half, with the wind in their favour, All Golds A quickly used the advantage and came back into the game and at 80 minutes it was 36-36. However the extra time took its toll and the visitors, notwithstanding valiant defence, succumbed to injuries. This led to Somerset capitalising accordingly and scoring twice in injury time to make the final score 48-36.
Head Coach Marcus Brown was delighted with his charges, ” We played with great skill and courage and were unlucky not to have at least a share of the spoils. There are many positive aspects to build on.
We now look forward to a local derby at St Peter’s Sports’ Centre on June 5th against the unbeaten UGRL Old Boys.”
